This vertical oil painting depicts the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child, shown against a dark interior with a window in the upper left hand corner.  The auburn haired, light-skinned Virgin holds the red-haired light-skinned Child sitting upright in her lap as he nurses from her right breast. The Virgin’s hair is parted in the center and has  braids crossed over the crown of her head, although the sides of her hair have been left free to fall in general waves to her chin. She looks downward at her nursing child, her fine features and rosy cheeks portraying an introspective calmness. She wears a scooped-neck red dress with a gathered high bodice and loose sleeves brought together at her wrist in a brown, fitted cuff with a thin white ruffle similar to the brown band and white ruffle edging the neckline of the dress. Her exposed breast peeks through a white-lined vertical slit in her bodice under which she holds her right breast with her left hand offering it to the Child, supporting his back with the spread fingers of her right hand. The chubby child seems to look upward, firmly latched onto his Mother’s breast, his soft baby fat almost palpable in his chest, arms and legs. A rust-lined, blue blanket covers the Virgin’s lap upon which the Child sits.  Above and behind the Child’s head, in the upper left corner,  there is a window through which is visible a vertical outdoor scene of a simple building, large tree and road trailing off into the vegetated, hilly distance.
