This small jade carving of two animals sits on a dark wooden stand. The shallow stand is footed, with openings carved through the stylistic curved forms, and raised slightly on one side to lift the parrot figure above the qilin figure. The pale green, jade parrot appears touches the wood stand with its beak. The bird is hunched down with its head tucked, its wings folded, and its breast touching its scaly feet. It’s tail feathers curve down to cover the center of the stand. The parrot faces in the opposite direction as the other animal, a qilin. The qilin has a squat, tortoise shaped body with short front legs and the bearded head of a dragon or lion-like beast with a square face and long beard. Its folded, hooved, longer hind legs and bushy horse’s tail meet the parrot in the center of the sculpture.  The qilin moves in the opposite direction as the bird, although his head is turned back toward the parrot.
