Folding Fan: Pastoral Vignettes, 18th century
Watercolor on silk, 20.5 cm (8 1/16 in.)
This is a folding fan from France, spread out to show all the different decorated sections. The fan has thirteen slats in total with the fan fabric spread among them. The even number slats are straight sticks, while the odd slats are more decorative. The first and thirteenth have a hairbrush shape. The third and eleventh are made up of a larger and smaller oval and the fifth and ninth have a pocket watch and chain shape. The seventh, and center, slat does not have a matching pair and looks like a handheld mirror. A court scene is painted onto the center third of the fan. Framing the scene are three ladies in fancy dresses on the right and a seated woman on the left. A man with a musical instrument stands above her. Between them on a raised platform, from left to right, is a seated man, a person standing up, a person with a long train, and a seated woman. The ends of the fans are decorated with a filigree pattern. There is a hint of a rectangular frame around the fan. There is a beaded border that outlines the fan. In the space between the upper right and left corners of the frame and fan are branches with leaves.
