In this oil on canvas portrait, Mary Brough Stewart is depicted in a seated position dressed in a dark dress with a large white hat and collar against a brown background. She has pale skin, rosy cheeks and dark brown eyes. Her brown hair is barely visible below the large ruffled hat that she wears. The ruffled edge of the hat is a delicate lace trim. Her dark brown dress has a similar lace trim on the sleeves just below her elbows and a soft white collar draped across her shoulders. There are plain black ribbon bracelets tied around both of her wrists and she holds her arms in her lap in a crossed position. She gazes pensively out at the viewer.
