This red velvet wall hanging is approximately 11ft long and 5 feet wide. Five vertical bands of red velvet have been sewn together into a large rectangle that is bordered in gold trim with a serpentine acanthus leaf design. The central panel is twice the width of the other four panels. The red velvet of the center panel is so worn that it appears pink or almost white in large sections and its floral pattern is difficult to interpret. This panel is the only one with appliqued gilt fabric sewn over it to form a scrolling trellis design of diamond shapes. The narrower flanking panels are composed of many worn, red voided velvet pieces in different floral designs. One design shows pear branches over a background of small chevrons. Another design is of large hibiscus flowers with scrolling leaves. A third has smaller, more stylized flowers and branch motifs. To unify the whole, there is a valence at the top of the composite textile. It is also of red velvet but the velvet has gilded fabric appliquéd to each of three sections in a stylized acanthus leaf design. The valence is trimmed at the bottom in gold fabric and fringe cut into a large three-[art chevron.
