The haloed Virgin sits facing forward on a wooden bench. She wears a flowing gold robe over a green gown with gold trim at the neckline. Her face is tilted slightly to our left, looking down at the Child, and her hands meet with fingers touching in front of her chest. She is light-skinned with a high forehead and long nose. Her fair hair falls gently over her left shoulder. The haloed Child is lying across his mother’s lap, with his arms resting across his body, and his legs stretched out but slightly bent. He is naked, and like his mother, light-skinned. His gaze is unfocused. Behind the Virgin is the rose hedge, with deep pink and white flowers. A semi-circle of gold is above the hedge. What appears to be dark green foliage is above the semi-circle and between openwork sections of the frame.
