Hanging Amulet Box (Kake-mamori), early 19th century
Paper-lined brocaded silk on bamboo painted black, with gilded metal mountings, 45.5 x 8.5 cm (17 15/16 x 3 3/8 in.)
This cylindrical object made of bamboo is displayed in a horizontal position, resting on a gray background. There is metal plating in a band in the middle, in a band running the length of the cylinder, and along both edges. On other parts of the cylinder, the bamboo surface is visible. Both metallic and bamboo surfaces have embossed intricate floral designs. There are metallic rings on both ends of the cylinder. Each ring has an orange rope tied to it, with a large orange tassel at each end of the rope.
