This horizontal oil painting shows an inside view of the apartments of a Japanese Chief Priest through a cross-sectional view.  About halfway in, the room is divided by two wide gold panels that rise about two-thirds of the height of the room, on either side with a wide opening in the center through which we may glimpse an inner room. This opening is spanned at the top by rolled up shades secured by two navy-blue and red tassels.  Above these panels a long horizontal wood-framed window with central divider, shows what appears to be a long, low loft-like room with finely striped vertical wall covering and possibly some short of a multi-legged piece of furniture running almost the expanse of the room. Returning to the main room below, only the back sections of the lateral walls of the main room are visible as are the olive-green floor boards between the lateral walls. Further detailing the central dividing wall, the panel on the left has a rather dominant painting of dark brown rolling hills, bushes and a tree with a small figure under the tree. The right panel is mostly gold but has a painting of a soaring white bird carrying a small robed woman  above the rim of gentle hills below.  Between the panels through the door-like opening is the  recessed wall of the back room. Here we see another outdoor scene mostly in somber browns and grays of a low pointed-roof structure set within hazy vegetation and hills rising in the background. A thin pink mat rests on the floor in front of this scene. This back room extends out of our view laterally in both directions hidden by the gold panels in front.
