This vertical portrait of Matthew Stewart Prichard was created with pen and watercolor on off-white paper. Prichard is shown from the chest up, facing toward our left. Prichard’s head is shown in a clearly outlined profile. His skin is light, his brown hair is short, parted, and partially receded. His light brown left eye gazes into the distance, his nose is pointed, his mouth is closed, and his chin is firm. Prichard is wearing a white or light-colored shirt with a collar that rises high on his neck, and a green tie or other piece of fabric tucked lower on his neck. Prichard’s suit jacket or coat, which is sketched more loosely and in less detail than his head, is closed and has narrow lapels.
