This is a small, vertical pencil and watercolor painting on paper, representing the Assumption of the Virgin and Saint Catherine of Siena. The focus of this work is on the Virgin Mary, seated on a rounded-back throne, her hands held to her chest in a prayerful position. She wears a patterned beige robe. Her hair is covered by a light green hood falling to her neckline in a gentle v-shape with a light-red band running horizontally between the two sides of the neckline. Her skin is medium-light, her forehead broad, and features small with downcast eyes and closed thin lips. Behind her, she is encircled by the light grey-gold back of her throne, around which we see the heads and red or light gold wings of 5 angels peering at the Virgin between two light red arches.  A sixth nude, full-bodied angel flies in on our upper right holding an object in the upraised right arm and coils or dark brown material around the torso and left arm. Below this angel, against a blue streaked with pink background, is Saint Catherine of Siena, a woman with light skin wearing a white headdress and brown robe. Catherine’s features are drawn schematically with single black lines, her gaze downward and her mouth shut. She holds a white lily on a long stem in her right hand and a book in her left. In the center front of the painting three tall, narrow, unlit candles with three narrow bands of gold rise up at the side of the seated Virgin to our left, with three shorter, narrow, also unlit candles arising on the lower left in front of the seated Virgin’s feet.
