This horizontal oil painting is a summer scene with two figures standing by the sea. The first figure, just to the viewer’s left of center, is a tall woman with reddish hair and light skin standing on a rock outcropping. She is dressed in a long white dress with long sleeves, and holds up a white parasol. She is watching the other figure, a female child, in the center of the painting. The child also wears a white dress, and has shoulder-length reddish hair and light skin. She stands in the water right next to the rocks. The land and rock areas are shown mostly in shades of ochre, while the areas of water are vividly rendered in intense shades of blue.
