Visible from his shoulders up, George Proctor is sitting with his body squarely facing us while his head is turned slightly to our right so that just one of his ears is visible. He has a fair complexion; brown hair, parted in the middle with slight wavy pompadours on each side that fall inward in curls on his forehead; thin, dark slightly arched eyebrows; deep blue or possibly brown eyes; straight nose and thin, slight smile. He wears a dark brown jacket over a white dress shirt with stand-up collar and wing tips, and he sports a dark brown tie with gold and blue design. The light falls on the right side of the portrait, falling on his hair and that side of his face. The background looks hastily painted and surrounds his head with wide turquoise brushwork that changes to gold towards the outside edges.
