This is a very long (about 12 foot), narrow (19 inches) oil painting on canvas. It shows a hazy landscape of blue and pink skies with wispy gray clouds, far away mountains with a flowing river (on the right side of the painting), and several large tents with a pair of figures nearby (on the left side of the work). In the middle ground there is a central dark hill looming over three groups of men lounging on the ground in the foreground. The central cluster of six men are positioned directly in front of the hill’s center. They form a tight group although their bodies are spread out irregularly their legs splayed in different directions. Their partially reclining bodies are clothed from the waist down with loose drapery of white, green, gold, or red. All but one look towards an odd figure standing on their left. This fully clothed person has shoulder length blonde hair. He carries a long stick in his left hand and gestures non threateningly with his right palm outstretched toward the central group of lounging men. He is wearing a long sleeved, pale green belted tunic. His clothing sets him apart but his small size is more puzzling. His proportions are too small to be in this scene, even if he is a child. Nevertheless, all the men in the painting are looking directly at him. One man raises a hand in a gesture of greeting, another opens his lips as if to speak to him, and most of the others simply stare at him. On the far right side of the painting, there is another solitary man of normal size looking at the small, central figure. Like the others, he is naked from the waist up. His muscular back is visible as he sits on the ground with his right cheek pressed against a leafy tree that the center of his torso is behind. He is holding a bow in his left hand as he peeks around the tree at the group of figures. On the opposite side of the painting, another separate group of half dressed men lounge on the ground with their sleeping dog. One gestures as he starts to stand, using a long stick to help him. They are also looking at the small central figure. The painting is framed in an elaborate gilded frame decorated with a continuous rope motif and another continuous band of leaves, flowers, wheat sheaves, and ribbon.
