Very loosely painted with blurred outlines, this painting centers on two women accompanied by a small boy. All the figures have white skin. In the center right, a standing woman in a muted red dress looks down on a seemingly younger, yellow-clad woman slightly in front of her in the center left, sitting reading a book. Her right leg is raised on a low stool. On our left, next to the woman in yellow, a young, standing boy pets a shaggy, thin white and black dog, alert and up on all fours in front of his master. A second similar dog sits on his hind legs to our right, looking back at the threesome. The women’s dresses are solid colors of a seemingly luxurious fabric with heavy lace around their moderately low-cut necklines and three-quarter length sleeves. The young boy wears a dark green jacket with a white, loose fitting collar and pink cuffs and pink tights. His brown hat with a short up-turned rim rests on his head. The features of the figures appear idealized and sweet-looking. Details of their clothing and posture are occluded by shadows in the scene. Immediately behind the grouping is a waist-high parapet that seems to function as the delimitation of a terrace with a thick railing and base separated by upright, rounded supports. This parapet extends from the right side of the painting running behind the women and terminating in a solid rectangular base behind the boy, upon which rests an large gold-flecked urn. Where this rectangular base ends, we can see a view of the country vista of indistinct hills and trees that seems to unfold under a variously shaded blue and white sky. The whole scene is framed by softly painted trees in various shades of brown with a hint of green.
