Yi Qun Xu, one of the rising stars of the cello, makes her Gardner Museum debut with pianist Yoon Lee. To hear their musical partnership is to experience chamber music-making at its finest. The program includes works by Amy Beach, a musical force to be reckoned with and contemporary of Isabella Stewart Gardner, alongside fantastical and heroic musical narratives by Janáček and Prokofiev. The cello sings like a human voice in works by Isang Yun and Yintong Liu, with Yun’s work taking its name from the Korean word for a vocal song and Liu’s piece drawing on the sounds of Chinese opera.

While the City of Boston’s vaccination and mask mandates are lifted for general museum visits, the Gardner maintains its proof of vaccination and mask requirements for free and ticketed events in Calderwood Hall.
