Shen Wei & The Gardner's Asian Art Collection

Exclusive to Friends of Fenway Court Patrons

Wednesday, May 26, 2021
12 - 1 pm
This is a virtual program

Isabella Stewart Gardner had a great appreciation for Asian art that grew over her lifetime as she began to travel more and expand her collection. Over the past year, in conjunction with the Gardner's current exhibition Shen Wei: Painting in Motion, Gardner curators and conservators undertook new research on the Chinese works in the Museum's collection in collaboration with experts across the field.

Join Pieranna Cavalchini, Tom and Lisa Blumenthal Curator of Contemporary Art at the Gardner Museum, and Nancy Berliner, Wu Tung Senior Curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for a conversation that will explore this research, Isabella's passion for Asian art and how other Bostonians' collecting practices compared, and the influence of her friendship with Okakura Kakuzō, a Japanese scholar of art and culture.
