Teens Behind the Scenes

Bringing together art education, teens, and the magical environment of the Gardner Museum, Teens Behind the Scenes is an amazing experience for anyone who wants to create and learn. Here's all you need to know about the program, in the teens’ own words.

What is Teens Behind the Scenes?

We are the young ambassadors of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We’re highly motivated, energetic, and committed Boston students in grades 10-12. Teens Behind the Scenes is a great way to learn more about museums and art, and you don’t need prior experience to join our team.

What do we do at the Gardner Museum?

We spend the first half of the school year exploring museum careers, learning from the staff about the different positions at the Museum. During the second half of the year we plan a Teen Takeover event and facilitate interactive activities with visitors.

We meet from 3:30 to 6 pm after school on two Thursdays each month from September through June, and complete five shifts throughout the year on weekday afternoons or Saturdays to shadow staff. We also work full days during school vacation weeks and Monday holidays, and at evening events during the summer. Special projects, such as workshops with the Artists in Residence, sometimes offer additional hours.

Why should you join the Teens Behind the Scenes?

We earn a stipend for all hours worked (at the Massachusetts minimum wage). Additional benefits include snacks at meetings and events, a Museum ID that gives you access to the Gardner and free admission to other museums, and the opportunity to strengthen your academic, professional, and personal skills by working on a team and taking on a leadership role in a professional setting.
