Calderwood Hall

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s “sonic cube” is a unique and intimate performance venue for our Public Programs and Weekend Concert Series. It is also where visitors can view a short film that introduces them to the Museum during their visit.

Calderwood Hall’s cubic design allows for 80% of its seats to be front row. The performance area is on the floor surrounded by two rows of seats typically arranged in a square, although the layout can change depending on the performance. Additionally, there are three levels of glass-fronted balconies, each one row deep. This unique design allows for an intimate connection between performer and audience and provides excellent acoustics. The creation of this space was a collaboration between the Gardner Museum's former Abrams Curator of Music, Scott Nickrenz; award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano; and Japanese acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota.

If you are in need of accessible seating, please do not hesitate to contact our Box Office at 617 278 5156.

Please note: We do not recommend balcony seating for those with vertigo or severe acrophobia.
