Neighborhood Luminary Salon

Susan Thompson is a Boston based artist who holds a long standing dedication to community empowerment through the arts. She has taught art in public and private schools, museums, neighborhood houses, and other community and academic institutions. She is currently an artist in the African American Artists in Residence Program (AAMARP) at Northeastern University.

As an artist, Susan has immersed herself in the art experience on many different levels. She has travelled to China, Japan, Haiti, Cuba, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Benin Africa and more recently to South Africa. She visited these places as a participant in various cultural exchange projects.

Susan Thompson has exhibited widely in solo and group shows. Her work is represented in private and public collections. She has created public art for the MBTA Orange Line, the Parks Department, the Afro-American Museum of History, the Children's Museum, Bunker Hill Community College and Beth Israel Medical Center. More recently, with Johnetta Tinker, she created a mural in Roxbury that paid homage to the distinguished artist, Allan Rohan Crite.

Susan has received awards from Paige Academy, Community Works, Mass Council for the Arts and Humanities, and became a Brother Thomas Fellow in 2021.

Susan attributes her illustrative career to her mentor Allan Rohan Crite. He referred to himself as her launching pad. He did everything in his power to help her develop as an artist. Without his guidance and belief in her drive and determination; the above accomplishments in this biography would not have been possible.
