From Gardner's Boston to Inghirami's Rome
Saturday
November 2, 2019
3:30 - 5 pm
Calderwood Hall
When Gardner purchased the portrait of Inghirami, she not only brought the first Raphael to America, but a little slice of Vatican history. While more than six million visitors a year trek the endless corridors to the Sistine Chapel today, the Vatican that Tommaso Inghirami knew in the early 1500s was far more compact. As librarian, he was responsible for the magnificent library at its center.
Join us for a conversation that takes us from Gardner's Boston to Inghirami's Rome, following the Vatican librarian from his house on the Palatine across Rome to one of the most famous decorative cycles of the Renaissance, Raphael’s Stanza della Segnatura.
Speakers:
Joseph Connors, Research Professor, History of Art & Architecture, Harvard University
Nathaniel Silver, William & Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
