Isabella Stewart Gardner grew azaleas at Green Hill in Brookline, MA, including cold-hardy species in her gardens and tender species in her greenhouses. Through diligent pruning, she cultivated azaleas in impressive forms with masses of delicate white blooms. Today, root pruning techniques allow Gardner Museum horticulturists to grow mature shrubs in petite terracotta pots.
