Southeast Asia

COMMENTARY

As part of their tour of Asia from 1883 to 1884, the Gardners traveled throughout Southeast Asia. This part of their trip was particularly facilitated by local colonial authorities. For example, their visit to the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia was the result of a chance encounter with an official named De Barre who apparently worked for the French colonial authorities, which included the protectorate of Cambodia. De Barre convinced the Gardners to visit and helped make the arrangements for the excursion.

Gardner was likely one of the first American women to visit the site, and she described the experience at length in her diary entry for November 18, 1883:

Up at 5, coffee, and off on elephants and in bullock carts about 6.30. About 3/4 of an hour to Angkor Thom's gateway. A wonderful ride there through the jungle. Beautiful gateway, great moats and wall. Then a tramp through the jungle to see the wonderful ruins

As with many of Gardner’s albums, her recollections do not include the Indigenous inhabitants or how they reacted to her presence in their home.
