Common Threads: Weaving Stories Across Time

In Isabella Stewart Gardner's time, she hosted concerts and other artistic events. In this tradition, award-winning composer David Lang and librettist Sibyl Kempson have designed a radical new work, true pearl: an opera in five tapestries, an "in-ear opera," for you to experience via private headphones in the Museum's Tapestry Room. The "stage" for each act consists of a sixteenth-century tapestry from a series based on the life of King Cyrus of Persia—a dramatic story of empire-building, betrayal, and revenge.

Composer David Lang and librettist Sibyl Kempson talk about what inspired them to write true pearl: an opera in five tapestries for the Gardner's special exhibition Common Threads: Weaving Stories Across Time.
