Botticelli: Heroines + Heroes

In preparation for this exhibition, our conservators studied the Story of Lucretia in detail. One technology—infrared reflectography—revealed the "ghosts" of several figures lurking beneath the surface. Pull back the slider below to see for yourself!

Botticelli originally created a bigger army. He later changed his mind and painted over several soldiers, thinning the crowd. In doing this, Botticelli's adjustment opens up the composition to enhance the impression of the main square as a plausible space.

Botticelli: Heroines + Heroes is on view February 14 - May 19, 2019 in Hostetter Gallery.
