Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner at the Cheney sale from the auctioneers Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, London for £1 on 20 July 1886, lot 1394, through the bookseller and publisher Bernard Quaritch (1819-1899), London and the scholar and critic Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908).
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
