Probably commissioned by the family of Thomas Richmond Gale Braddyll (1776-1862) of Highhead Castle, Cumbria and Conishead Priory, Lancaster.
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the dealer C. McCarthy, Boston on 1 January 1892 for $1,500 for the set of china, a sedan chair (museum no. F25c24) and table (museum no. F21s8).


Coat of arms probably of the English family of Thomas Richmond Gale Braddyll (1776-1862): badger passant, unicorn's head with an anchor and leopard with a helmet; scroll reads "Coignoies toy mesme" (know thyself)
