Last year, Rachel Barton Pine took a thrilling “test-drive” on the Gardner Museum’s extraordinary 1770s viola d’amore (on display in the Yellow Room). Delighted with the instrument, she is returning to play a recital on violin and viola d’amore, including our extraordinary and rare instrument. Our viola d’amore has seven bowed strings and additional sympathetic strings that add a silvery glow to the sound. Championed by composers as varied as Vivaldi, Haydn, and Bernstein, the instrument developed from roots in Middle Eastern music.
Selections by Vivaldi, Telemann, and Haydn for viola d’amore
Johannes Brahms Violin Sonata (1886)
Pablo de Sarasate Introduction and Tarantella for Violin (1900)
