The terrific Lysander Trio, formed when they were students at Juilliard, are phenomenal chamber musicians. The oldest work on their program is by the remarkable Swedish violinist and composer Amanda Maier, who knew and worked with Brahms and Grieg, among others. South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen, whom the Museum has commissioned, writes music that is at once charming and fiendishly difficult. His sophisticated approach to form and rhythm finds inspiration in the musics of various sub-Saharan peoples (including the Xhosa clan, to which he belongs) as well as the global classical music tradition.
