The Larger Landscape Conversation: Right of Assembly

Thursday, October 27, 2022
7 - 8:30 pm
CALDERWOOD HALL

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution promises its citizens the rights of assembly, free association, and to peaceably gather in public spaces. The past several years have witnessed the growth of social protest in public space across the political spectrum and the increasing contestation of the public realm for various forms of political action. What is the role of design in relation to these spaces of public protest?

Join us for a stimulating conversation with leading voices on the role of design and planning in relation to the public space as a venue for social protest movements and political speech. This program features Jeffrey Hou of the University of Washington, De Nichols, of YouTube, and Elaine Scarry of Harvard University, and is hosted by Charles Waldheim, the Gardner's Ruettgers Curator of Landscape and Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design.
