PROGRAM

John Zorn - 18 Studies from the Later Sketchbooks of J.M.W. Turner (1841-1845)

As a composer, Zorn has drawn inspiration from a dizzying number of sources that bespeak a restless and voracious intellect, but one of his richest ongoing sources of inspiration has been visual art. From an early age, Zorn has made a practice of spending many hours in museums, absorbing the work of artists he loves. Recently, he has increasingly made performing in museums a central part of his own artistic practice. We are thrilled to present this set of fiendishly virtuosic works inspired by the late sketchbooks of Turner. Isabella Stewart Gardner collected an early Turner watercolor, and displayed it in the Yellow Room in the company of things musical.

This concert runs approximately one hour with no intermission.

Stephen Gosling, Piano, Photographer: Daniel D’Ottavio.
