Art from Asia is in nearly every gallery of this museum. However, Isabella put much of it in smaller hallways and private spaces, including the Rear Hall. Isabella installed her collection personally and left specific instructions in her will regarding the display of art but limited her stipulations to certain galleries. After her death, the Museum did not consider the Rear Hall to be part of the protected installation and moved many of the artworks. In 2023, the Museum reinstalled the three Japanese cedar doors called sugido in the space according to Gardner’s 1924 curatorial vision.
