Commentary

Isabella Gardner had a special fondness for this prie-dieu. It was in her bedroom at her Brookline residence, and in 1897 she listed it among the objects to be taken to the museum then being planned. Once installed in the Long Gallery, she included it in her published catalogues, one of the few pieces of furniture to receive such attention.
