Commentary

James plays on Gardner’s vanity in this letter by recalling one of her most recent acquisitions, Titian’s Europa, and drawing a boldly flattering comparison between Gardner and the masterpiece: “As she hangs before you now (incredible woman!—I mean both of you) do tell her I languish for her.
