This lovely, small, stone sculpture of a rose would fit in the palm of your hand. It is a realistic rendering of a carved rose done in a quartz-like stone called chalcedony. The sculpture has two parts: the peachy pink colored rose is nested in a carved wooden stand. Both pieces combine to stand less than 2 inches tall. The stone rose has about four sequential layers of loose petals around a deep, round opening at the top. The petals open more the further they get from the center. The variegated tones in the stone are irregularly and prominently veined with white and brown. The stone has been highly polished to have a lustrous and translucent sheen. The flower rests, off center, in a dark stained and carved wooden stand. The stand is carved to represent a dense, tangled botanical vine so the two parts of the sculpture are united thematically even though the materials and colors contrast. It is about four inches in diameter and about half an inch tall one side and twice that tall on the other. The flower head nests on the short side and covers it but the tall side of the stand protrudes up on the other side of the flower to cradle it.  The carving in the stand is looser at the top so the viewer can see through it and solid at the bottom.
