Backstage with Castle of our Skins

Thursday, March 11, 2021
12 - 1 pm
This is a virtual program

Join us for a conversation between George Steel, Abrams Curator of Music, and Ashleigh Gordon, Artistic/Executive Director and Violist of Castle of our Skins, a Boston-based ensemble dedicated to celebrating Black artistry by championing the music of Black American composers.

Ashleigh and George will give us a behind-the-scenes look at a recent collaboration between Castle of our Skins and the Gardner: a series of digital programs called Witness: Spirituals and the Classical Music Tradition. This collection of four short videos, featuring performances in the Museum’s galleries, explores the wide-ranging and inventive ways in which Black American composers have drawn inspiration from spirituals. To finish the talk, participate in a Q&A with Ashleigh and George about this project.
