Message from the Director
What a wonderful beginning! The Museum has fast become home to me. Since I arrived, so many people from all over the world have reached out to tell me that this is their favorite Museum and that they LOVE the Gardner. I know of no museum that engenders such a strong sense of emotion and affection.
Isabella’s remarkable and daring vision is even better than I anticipated. With its exceptional collection, vibrant programs and exhibitions, and magnificent courtyard, the Gardner awakens the senses and transports you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is both a respite and a source of inspiration for our visitors, community, neighbors, and members. And yes, I too have fallen in love!
There is always something new at the Gardner. Our performance hall is filled with sounds of traditional and new music, our exhibition space features both historical and contemporary work, and the courtyard plantings reflect the seasons as they evolve throughout the year. While the permanent collection remains constant, we ourselves change and with that, we make new personal connections to works of art, galleries, the courtyard, and each other.
Whether it is your first visit or one of many, whether you come in person or check us out online, I invite you to explore the Gardner, to share in the joy and adventure it inspires, and to find your favorite work of art or gallery and make it your own, returning to it time and time again.
Norma Jean Calderwood Director
True to the ambitious vision of its founder and her spirit of creative risk-taking, the mission of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is:
to bring to life and preserve the rich historic collection;
to cultivate talent in the pursuit of knowledge and acts of creation in the arts and humanities;
to support artists, landscape architects, musicians, scholars and students; and
to engage local and global audiences in a sanctuary of beauty and the arts where deeply personal and communal adventures unfold.
