Semi-circular in shape, this Italian cope, an ecclesiastical cloak worn by a priest or bishop, has a semi-circular neck opening near the straight border. The extensive circular portion is red, silk cut velvet with a narrow red and beige linen border. The wide, red and beige embroidered orphrey, or decorative vertical panels that fall down the front, are very hard to see, but seem to include both large and small animals intertwined within foliage and other organic forms.  A thin strip outlines this border next to the red velvet part, and consists of a series of small 7-pointed flowers or stars within almond shaped red patches. The cope is very faded and worn, the red velvet marked by vertical and horizontal beige evidencing its age.
