Internship Opportunities at the Gardner Museum
Internship opportunities are available in the fall, spring, and summer, following the academic calendar. Positions are regularly offered (but not limited) in development, education, and marketing. All internship positions at the Gardner Museum are unpaid.
School Partnership Teaching Intern
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum seeks a graduate student as the School Partnership Teaching Intern to assist with school and teacher programs using the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) teaching approach. The Gardner Museum's School Partnership Program is a discussion-based, multiple-visit collaboration with local schools, providing Boston classes in Pre-K through 12th grade regular opportunities to view, discuss, and write about works of art both in the classroom and at the Museum.
The School Partnership Teaching Internship will focus on implementing School Partnership programs for studio and greenhouse spaces, gathering data for program evaluation and research, facilitating innovative discussion, writing, and sketching activities in the galleries, and supporting ongoing professional development for partner teachers.
Description
- Academic year-long, unpaid teaching position
- 8-16 hours per week, preferably mornings, with additional hours as needed
- Must be able to work a minimum of two mornings a week, preferably not Tuesdays when Museum is closed to the public
- Internship begins mid-August or early September 2013
- Course credit to be provided by cooperating educational institution
Responsibilities
- Participate in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) training, on-site observations, readings and discussion of theory and practice, evaluation, and independent research that relates to the Museum's collection and programming
- Lead group discussion with Pre K-Grade 12 students using the VTS method
- Work closely with School Partnership Educator and Director of School and Teacher Programs to assist in preparation and implementation of Partnership programming
- Collect, organize and analyze data for formative program assessments
- Develop a research project that documents his/her experiences in the internship, and/or write a final paper to complete requirements for course credit through the cooperating educational institution
Requirements
- Availability throughout the academic year (minimum September 2013-early May 2014)
- Preferably pursuing a graduate degree in Education, Art Education, or Museum Education and knowledge of Art History and/or Studio Art
- Self-motivation and a desire to learn about museum education practice are essential qualities for a successful candidate
- Previous teaching experience and/or knowledge of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) preferred
- Must be able to attend teacher trainings and other education events some evenings/weekends
- Must be able to work independently and be proactive in problem-solving and flexibility
- Microsoft Word, Excel proficient

Tours/Visitor Learning Intern
Title: Tours/Visitor Learning Intern
Department: Education
Reports To: Manager of Tours and Visitor Learning Programs
Type of Internship: Unpaid internship; part-time; 15-24 hours per week. Must be able to work Friday, as well as Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. (The Museum is closed Tuesday.)
Summary of Internship
The Visitor Learning Division of the Education Department is responsible for ensuring a positive learning experience for all museum visitors, including school and adult tour groups, and the general public. The Gardner Museum offers opportunities for visitors to learn about the history of the museum, and to better understand the ways that Isabella Gardner's legacy continues in our programmatic efforts today. The intern plays an important role assisting education staff in planning for and implementing these learning opportunities by working with volunteers, groups in the galleries, providing administrative support, and assisting with audience research.
Responsibilities
- Overseeing the organization and materials in Living Room, Information Table, and Volunteer Lounge
- Administrative assistance managing the Museum Volunteer corps of 150+; coordination of daily pre-shift volunteer meetings
- Greeting and coordinating arrival of self-guided groups
- Completing final steps of the group registration process (filing group registration forms, sending confirmation letters)
- In-gallery work with visitors as needed
- Supporting the Tour Manager and Director of Visitor Learning with other projects as needed
- Other administrative duties as assigned
Requirements
- Ideal candidate has an interest in a visitor-centered approach in museum education
- Strong interest in working with a variety of people from student visitors to museum volunteers
- Preferably pursuing a degree in Education, Art Education, or Museum Education and knowledge of Art History; Must be at least a rising college junior; Graduate students are also encouraged to apply
- Self-motivation and a desire to learn about museum education practice are essential qualities for a successful candidate
- Must be able to attend some trainings and other education events some evenings/weekends
- Must be able to work independently, be proactive in problem-solving, be a flexible and creative thinker, and possess strong organizational skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, familiarity with Patron Edge a plus

Development Intern

Type of Position: Unpaid internship, part-time
Scope of Position
The Development Intern will gain insight into the inner workings of a busy, successful museum development office. This internship is an ideal opportunity to learn The Raiser's Edge, the top development database used among non-profit organizations. The intern will receive database training and an entry-level understanding of prospect management and research. Additionally, s/he will provide assistance in all aspects of Individual Giving.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain electronic donor records
- Enhance donor records through proactive research and data entry
- Assist at museum and special events, when needed
- Assist with special event invitations, solicitations, and fulfillment mailings
- Other administrative duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Interest and enthusiasm to learn about Development
- Proficiency with Raiser's Edge software or other database software preferred
- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to handle confidential material with discretion
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Able to participate as part of a creative and energetic development team
- Able to commit to a regular work schedule
- Able to multitask and work independently on projects
- Sense of humor and flexibility are essential

Marketing/Public Relations Intern
Title: Marketing/Public Relations Intern

Reports To: Media Relations Manager
Type of Internship: Part- to Full-time internship; flexible schedule
The Marketing/Public Relations intern will work with the museum's Marketing and Public Relations staff in support of the department's projects and needs. This internship will involve a good deal of data entry and maintenance of community and media databases, so a willingness and ability to work with databases is key. However, there are also opportunities for contributing ideas about grassroots and online marketing, with a particular focus on expanding listings of museum programs in online and community media, including neighboring universities.
Key Components and Essential Functions of this role include:
Ongoing Projects
- Maintain and organize media clippings to keep on permanent file
- Organize and update information in online media contacts database
- Enter contact information and help research potential new contacts
- Process applications for "Isabellas Free…Forever!" program, keeping contact information current and mailing welcome packets to new members
- Research and help expand listings coverage of museum exhibitions, lectures and other programs in the media, with a particular focus on community newspapers and online calendars
- Assist with exhibition openings and special events as needed
- Check various newspapers and magazines daily for Museum articles, general art articles of interest, and accuracy of Museum listings and ads
Other
- Willingness to support the marketing department's overall needs and projects
- Assist with setup and cleanup of press-related events
- Assist with assembling materials for press contacts
- Assist with preparation of inter-departmental memos of upcoming media events and prior media coverage
General Requirements
- General understanding and interest in arts marketing/public relations
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Ability to take ownership over projects and work proactively
- Web- and computer-savvy (Microsoft Excel, online media database software, various web search engines, etc.)
