Pianist Paavali Jumppanen "performs with immense power and drive, and commands an extraordinary range of colors,” writes The New York Times. “The piano sings beautifully, but with a voice that is big and full of expressive possibilities.” Jumppanen has presented solo recitals at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center, and has toured Australia with the Melbourne Symphony to critical acclaim. Born in Finland, Jumppanen won first prize in the country’s national Maj Lind Competition in Helsinki at age nineteen, and has played with every orchestra in Finland. He has served as Artistic Director of Finland’s Lemi-Lappeenranta Music Festival since 2004 . A strong proponent of new music, Jumppanen has recorded the complete piano sonatas of Pierre Boulez, on a Deutsche Grammophon disc produced in 2005 with the composer in honor of his 80th birthday. The UK newspaper The Guardian called the five-star recording “ the finest and best-recorded disc of Boulez’s piano music so far.”
Jumpapnen recorded the complete Beethoven violin sonatas with violinist Corey Cerovsek in fall 2006 for an award-winning three-disc set released by Claves. Prior to the recording, the duo performed the sonatas live at the Gardner Museum in 2003 and 2004. Jumppanen is currently performing a series of The Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas at the Gardner, with performances this season on October 14 and December 2, 2007 and February 10 and April 13, 2008.
