Position: Curator of Landscape

Scope of Position:
The Curator of Landscape provides leadership to the landscape program, developing new approaches to help audiences engage with landscape concepts in the unique context of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The curator shapes programming that will spark dialogue about our relationship to landscape – past, present, and future – and will also work collaboratively with the curators of contemporary art, education, historic art, and music to infuse landscape ideas into other program areas. Building connections with local landscape communities, the curator of landscape will position the Gardner Museum as a lively forum for the discussion of current landscape issues.
In consultation with the Director of Operations and the Director of Horticulture, the Curator of Landscape will provide guidance on the design of the interior courtyard displays.
Specific Responsibilities/Duties:
- Develop innovative landscape programming, including curating the existing landscape lecture series
- Curate landscape content for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum website
- Realize a new role for landscape in the Renzo Piano-designed new wing, including interpretive strategies for landscape through residencies, education programs, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary projects
- Participate in the quarterly curators’ Program Concepts meetings to generate ideas for new programs and projects
- Expand audiences for the museum’s landscape programming through cultivation of current and new audiences
- Provide design oversight for the 8 to 10 seasonal courtyard displays
- Plan and oversee budget
- Supervise part-time landscape staff
- Participate in board of trustees landscape committee
- Develop a collegial relationship with the horticulture department
Requirements:
- Creativity and vision
- Advanced degree in landscape design, landscape history, or a related field
- Outstanding writer and speaker
- Strong publication record
