Title: Publicist, Marketing and Communications
Department: Marketing and Communications
Reports to: Public Relations Director
Scope
Working in close collaboration with the Public Relations
Director and the Director of Marketing and Communications
(department head), the Marketing and Communications Publicist
will build, execute, and support integrated marketing and
promotion campaigns in support of five programming cornerstones
- historic art, contemporary art, landscape, education, and
music - with particular emphasis on the museum's music/concert
series program.
Responsibilities
Press and PR
Promote museum programming through traditional, electronic,
direct-to-consumer marketing communications, from story development
through placement and, in close collaboration with PR Director,
support promotion of special exhibitions and visiting artists,
institutional news and events
Oversee public relations for and promotion of concerts,
cornerstone lectures, and signature special events, including
Gardner After Hours; Community Creations exhibition; Neighborhood
Nights; Venetian Valentine; Nasturtiums and other key landscape
installations; Isabellas programming; education events, news,
and outreach; and special Gardner Café offerings (with
PR Director)
Spearhead execution and marketing of biweekly "The
Concert" podcast (with Concert Manager) - and new lecture
series podcasts
Write and oversee distribution of press materials including
museum listings and Seasonal and Annual Calendar Releases
(with PR Director)
Research and spearhead use of new/emerging technologies
Support/Contribute to strategic advertising plans,
from creative to media buy (with Director of Marketing)
Monitor, track, and report all museum media coverage
Review print and online publications daily for Museum
articles, general art articles of interest, and accuracy of
Museum listings and ads
Assist in researching, identifying, and managing strategic
partnerships and cross-promotion opportunities
Support/Oversee audience development, social networking,
and affinity organization research and outreach
Research, maintain, and update media, special-interest
press, and affinity organization lists and database
Oversee/Coordinate press receptions, in-gallery photo/film
shoots, and other special events (with PR Director)
Assist with market and audience research as needed
Assist in posting press releases/press kits to museum
pressroom
Field general museum press inquiries and image requests
Some weekend or night work may be required
Music Marketing
Working with the Music Manager, the Marketing and Communications
Publicist is responsible for marketing and promoting the museum's
live concert series and podcasts.
Administrative
Maintain departmental files, support departmental administration,
and manage undergraduate-level interns.
Experience
2-3 years experience, including prior marketing or
public relations experience in a nonprofit, corporate, Internet,
PR or other agency setting.
Proven interest in music, arts, culture.
Superior project management skills.
Demonstrated command of online environment and new
media
Proficiency in Microsoft applications a must.
B.A./B.S. degree required, preferably in communications,
journalism, art history, or music.
Further Qualifications
Experience in developing, implementing new media marketing
campaigns a plus.
Solid writing, copyediting, and proofreading ability required,
as are superior verbal and organizational skills. Experience
in writing for audiences/consumers of online media and e-communications
invaluable.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills essential
- as is the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
in meeting the demands of multiple, complex projects under
the pressures of tight deadlines.

the institution.
