Backstrap Loom Master Class
(Session I, 4-Day Workshop)

Wednesday, August 13, 10:00 AM

Choose between 2 sessions of this class, August 13-16 or August 20-23.

Some of history’s most beautiful and complex textiles have been woven on the backstrap loom, a simple, portable, inexpensive system in which a strap placed around the weaver’s body holds the warp in tension. Participants in this intensive 4-day workshop will learn from Cecilia Gómez Diaz and Margarita López Hernández, master weavers from Mexico’s Chiapas region. Each participant will create textiles that can be sewn and shaped to form a garment.

This 4-day master class is designed for participants with some prior experience in fashion, sewing, and/or weaving. It runs approximately 6 hours each day, from 10 am to 4 pm, August 13-16 in the Hostetter Gallery with the exhibition Carla Fernández: The Barefoot Designer, and outside in the garden, weather permitting. Each master class is limited to 8 participants.
