October 18, 2007 – Fascinating Rhythms
The Gardner is perhaps best known for its flowering courtyard or unique art collection. But from Isabella’s time at the turn of the century right up until today something else has filled the galleries, too: music. Concerts with young musicians and contemporary composers have been a part of the museum’s history for over a century.
- Courtyard Music: Free live music by Russ Gershon’s Intimate Ensemble from 5-7pm
- Gallery Travels: Archivist Kristin Parker sheds some light on the museum’s musical history through instruments, letters, manuscripts and more in the Yellow Room
- Viewfinder: Museum educator Michelle Grohe leads conversations at 6 & 7pm about our cassone, an Italian wedding chest decorated with musical imagery
- Exhibition: This month, in between special exhibitions, enjoy a tour of the museum’s permanent collection highlighting—you guessed it—music
- Drawing in the Galleries: Sketch one of the museum’s unique gallery spaces; drop in anytime between 6 & 8pm
After Hours PLUS
October 18, 2007, 7:00pm - Composer Portraits: Music of Julius Hemphill
One of the greatest jazz composers and saxophonists of his generation, Julius Hemphill (1938-1995) brought the sounds of the blues to the classical concert stage. Acclaimed jazz and classical players join forces in this genre-bending celebration: string quartet meets saxophone sextet, and solo piano meets solo sax.
More about this performance
Perhaps best-known as a saxophonist and composer for the World Saxophone Quartet, Julius Hemphill (1938-1995) had a career that spanned myriad roles: improvising saxophonist, jazz ensemble arranger, large-scale classical composer, and so much more. Acclaimed jazz greats Marty Ehrlich and the Julius Hemphill Sextet, renowned pianist Ursula Oppens, and the young classical players of the Daedalus String Quartet join forces in a genre-bending celebration in this Composer Portraits concert, the first of the season.
Program highlights include: One Atmosphere, a work for piano and string quartet written for and premiered by Oppens; Parchment, for solo piano, featured on Oppens’ Grammy-nominated disc “American Piano Music of Our Time”; and selections for the Julius Hemphill Sextet, including several original tunes and a wildly creative re-working of Charles Mingus’ tunes Nostalgia in Times Square, Alice’s Wonderland and Better Get Hit in Your Soul, rolled into one by Hemphill in Mingus Gold.
