February 21, 2008, 7:00pm - Jazz at the Gardner: Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet Guggenheim fellow Rudresh Mahanthappa is one of the most innovative young musicians and composers in jazz today. Named a Rising Star of the alto saxophone by the Downbeat International Critics Poll for the past five years, #2 in 2006, Rudresh has incorporated the culture of his Indian ancestry and has fused myriad influences to create a truly groundbreaking artistic vision. Hear him in performance with his quartet, to round out this night’s globetrotting theme.
One of seven ensembles Rudresh leads, the Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet released their most recent new album, Codebook, in September 2006; in short order, it was named one of the Top Jazz Albums of 2006 by The Village Voice, Jazztimes, and The Denver Post to name only a few and received rave reviews from Downbeat, Jazztimes, wired.com and Science Magazine. Recently, All About Jazz wrote of their live performance, “The elements of the musical palette were combined to strike a perceptible balance between limits and freedom, intellectualism and spirit..” A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Rudresh Mahanthappa performs as part of Jazz at the Gardner’s ongoing collaboration with the school, presenting outstanding current students and young alumni playing diverse musical styles.

The Gardner Café
The Gardner Café is open during After Hours, serving sweet and savory small plates and drinks from 5–9pm. A cash bar, offering specialty cocktails, wine and beer, is also available alongside the courtyard in the museum starting at 5:30pm.
