The Mexican tiles in the Spanish
Cloister and the tile floor in the Gothic Room inspired
the students from Paige Academy to create this ceramic
tile installation. The students learned about clay
and the difference between high and low relief. While
examining different objects in the Museum's collection,
the students learned that a medal or coin is an example
of low relief and that an object like the Roman sarcophagus
in the Courtyard is an example of high relief. Using
the high and low relief technique, each student designed
and glazed his/her own individual ceramic tile. They
are displayed here along with shells, beads and other
found objects. Eventually, these tiles will be permanently
installed in the new building at Paige Academy.
