The Museum's collection of chandeliers
and candlesticks inspired the students from the Hawthorne
Youth and Community Center to create these candlesticks.
The students noticed the different types of materials
artists used to enhance the shape and design of each
candlestick and chandelier. The students also learned
that a long time ago, only the wealthy could afford
to own candles because beeswax, the material used
to make them, was very rare and expensive. The Hawthorne
students decided to make their candlesticks from trees
that had been cut down next to their community center.
They embellished their candlesticks with recycled
materials and other found objects. These candlesticks
will be on display in the garden at the Hawthorne
Youth and Community Center this summer.
